The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Program allows students who have graduated from eligible Canadian designated learning institutions (DLIs) to obtain an open work permit to gain valuable Canadian work experience. Skilled Canadian work experience in Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities (TEER) categories 0, 1, 2 or 3 that is gained through the PGWP Program helps graduates qualify for permanent residence in Canada through the Canadian experience class within Express Entry.

The features of the PGWPP include the following:

The applicant must have graduated from a DLI. Programs in English as a Second Language (ESL), French as a Second Language (FSL), general interest, and preparatory programs are not eligible. Distance learning programs are eligible as long as they constitute less than 50% of the program. Overseas studies that are part of the program and distance learning completed outside of Canada will not be included in the length of the PGWP.

• The applicant must apply within 180 days after completing their studies.
• For programs that are greater than eight months but less than two years in duration, the PGWP will be issued for the same length as the program. For programs that are two years or longer, the PGWP will be issued for three years.
• The applicant must not have previously obtained a PGWP.
• Graduates who apply for a PGWP before their study permit expires can work full-time
  while their application is being processed.
